Growing high quality and disease free material is one of the challenges of the flower industry. Below are examples of some of the projects we’ve delivered in this field.

Black Velvet Petunia

Several years ago the Ball Horticultural Company, a world leader in ornamental breeding and product development, identified a new dominant color mutation in Petunia which they named gc1-1. The mutation resulted in a whole host of new and novel color outcomes and proved to be extremely valuable in the breeding of a large number of new varieties including the first ever black petunia variety, Black Velvet. Due to the novelty and value of this mutation, Ball wanted to protect the trait.

The KeyGene solution

Earlier, a BSA (Bulked Segregant Analysis) using AFLP markers was performed resulting in two diagnostic AFLP markers. To identify more markers and preferably sequence based markers, a seqBSA approach was used to identify SNP markers. The seqBSA resulted in numerous SNPs and 96 were selected and validated by KeyGene® SNPSelect. The validation and mapping resulted in 40 markers in a 25 cM window, of which 12 markers were closely linked to gc1-1.

Our research

At KeyGene, next to the AFLP markers, additional (sequence-based) markers were identified, markers were subsequently mapped and already used for the identification of the gc1-1 trait in breeding material.
