Resistances and Adaptation

Breeding for higher yield and better quality

Pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, insects and fungi are causing significant problems in different parts of the world. They can cause severe damage or even complete devastation to crops in some areas of the world. The research in this theme results in sustainable resistance against the pathogens during the whole production cycle of the crop. Such resistance can be found in nature. Wild species are in many instances not suitable for consumption, but they do contain the genetic information that provides interesting resistances.

The ultimate goal of the theme ‘Resistances and Adaptation’ is to introduce sustainable pathogen resistance in crops and to develop crops that can be grown successfully in different climatic and other growth-affecting conditions, both in greenhouses and in the open field. Research into ‘Adaptation’ will lead to genes that will bring about tolerance to abiotic stress such as saline conditions or drought. These types of circumstances differ from country to country and from region to region.
