AFLP® fingerprints are generated and compared to other fingerprints and/or to a marker database. This comparison can form the basis for variety identification and can support variety patent / registration applications.
Its Value
Variety identification, using the AFLP® technology:
is a highly informative addition to / alternative for phenotypic testing;
is a powerful tool in (out of court) negotiations with suspected infringers;
allows comparison of future fingerprints with a database of fingerprints;
clearly presents genetic similarities and differences.
Example
Figure 1 shows a typical outcome of a variety identification test and shows different levels of genetic similarity.
