KeyGene and the genetic analysis of plants

KeyGene applies genetic research in the support of breeders’ breeding and selection efforts.

All services that KeyGene provides, from a relatively simple genetic diversity analysis to the construction of high density integrated physical and genetic maps make breeding, selection and genomic research better, easier and faster.

KeyGene’s success is illustrated by the successes of its stategic customers (Enza Zaden, Rijk Zwaan, Vilmorin & Cie and Takii), all market leaders in the field of high-quality vegetable seeds.

The first mile-stone in KeyGene's history was the invention of the AFLP® technology in the early 1990’s. This technology has since become an immensely popular and highly regarded genetic fingerprinting technology. KeyGene applies the technology for the construction of genetic maps, linked marker assay development, the accelaration of inbred conversions, and a range of other services.

Later the AFLP based cDNA-AFLP technology also became a popular research tool for gene expression analysis and has been used amongst others for the construction of a large Arabidopsis transcript database and for the identification of a number of highly specific plant promoters.

KeyGene works for and with the worlds major vegetable breeders and also has a long track record of collaborations in prestigious plant genomic research programs.

Looking at technologies of the future, KeyGene has recently developed a high throughput SNP discovery technology called: CRoPS ™. The CRoPS ™ technology combines the power of AFLP® as a robust genome complexity reduction method with the power of new sequencing technologies, like the 454 Life Sciences technology highly parallel sequence analysis of DNA fragments. In addition, for efficient mutation screening the KeyPoint ™ technology was developed.
