Invention

The invention relates to genome editing of plant cells using a CRISPR system. More in particular, the invention provides for an efficient protocol for genome editing of plant cells using a Cpf1 CRISPR system. This protocol results in surprisingly high mutagenesis frequencies in calli grown from edited protoplasts.

Benefit

Genome editing technologies are rapidly emerging. CRISPR-system nucleases have proven to be highly agile and easy applicable. The patented technology ensures optimal editing efficiencies increasing the chance of obtaining a desired mutation in the targeted gene in plant tissue regenerated from an edited protoplast.

Vision

Understanding the function of genes is essential for the efficient breeding of improved crops. Efficient targeted genome editing technologies are important research tools in gene validation and may be used for the introduction of new traits in crop germplasm. The present invention contributes thereto.
