Invention

The invention provides for altered promoter sequences that convert a sexual allele of a plant into a parthenogenesis allele, which is capable of inducing parthenogenesis.

Benefits

Parthenogenesis refers to asexual reproduction in which growth and development of embryos occur without fertilization. The present invention provides for a way to confer parthenogenesis to a plant as part of apomixis.

Vision

Apomixis is of great interest in agriculture because it has the power to fix a favorable genotype, regardless of its genetic complexity, and allows production of organisms that can breed true in one step.
