Invention

The invented methodology involves producing a shoot of a plant by protoplast callus grafting. This method facilitates the regeneration of shoots with germline progenitor cells, particularly in recalcitrant plants. The invention allows for the application of new breeding technologies in crop improvement in recalcitrant germplasm.

Vision

This technology addresses the need for efficient regeneration of plant shoots, especially in recalcitrant plant species. By using protoplast callus grafting, it supports advancements in plant tissue culture and regeneration research, removing bottlenecks in many plant biotechnology workflows.

Benefits

Many workflows in plant biotechnology require regeneration from single cells into whole plants. As in general plant cells have a limited capacity to regenerate, this step is the major bottleneck of such workflows. The broadly applicable protocols of the present invention have the potency to be a game changer.
